SAPPOV: Want the recipe for IT success? Talk to a chef

Big data and analytics are transforming healthcare. But the best solutions aren’t one-step-wonders, they are made-to-order from the very best ingredients. Geoffrey Glaser, Senior Director of National Healthcare, SAP and Blaine Wilkes, Healthcare Delivery Manager, SAP whet your appetite for HANA and Big Data/Analytics transforming healthcare.

Today in healthcare, the number one priority in executives’ minds is how to make data consumable so that caregivers and patients can use it to be healthier. Our customer is the business user. They are the ones in the driving seat for the overall, big-picture outcome, helping populations to be proactive about their health.

When we assess their needs, we take the data that they use and produce, and try to find ways to make it work harder for them. That might mean anything from creating better transparency around readmissions management to imagining new billing cycles or integrated stock systems. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Some might want mobility, cloud, on-premise or a combination – the outcomes are all different.

It’s fair to say, then, that for a CIO looking at the business requirements of their users, there’s a certain amount of creative liberation. You are building something that delivers the outcomes that are necessary for the providers to provide care.

Well, there’s not a big difference between the approach to creating that IT infrastructure and being a chef making a risotto. For the chef, it’s not as easy as just boiling rice and chucking the ingredients in all at once. There’s a process. A risotto can have many different forms and recipes, from the simple to the complex. There are multiple steps and layers, but each of these include opportunities to change and adapt what you are doing. Whatever the recipe, your end goal is the same: to create a plate of food that your customer will crave.

In the same way a great risotto is a flexible dish that can take a number of combinations, in IT you might suddenly need integrations with radiology, prescription systems, lab results and more.  In each of these cases, your outcome is going to be different, and different organizations will have different requirements.

Above all, it has to be an experience that is positive for the consumer. Whether chef of caregiver building an IT infrastructure, you not going to just slap in a solution from a box and expect instant results. Every consumer needs it to be special, unique, made just for them. The goal is a very enjoyable and satisfying
user experience – data that can be consumed and used for better outcomes. A doctor needs to be able to use his iPad to pull up a patient’s records,
confidentially, securely and in real time, to treat the patient and also educate them on how to remain healthy, based on feeds of all these data.

What we’re describing here isn’t a single recipe, but an approach that comes from deep understanding of the way ingredients work together. At SAP we are able to address the different desires of our customers the same way a chef can address the different ideas of his consumers. And at our restaurant, rather than taking people into the cafeteria and giving them the same as everyone else, our goal is to offer them a seat at the chef’s table.
