Over the past year, more and more enterprise businesses have been looking into mobile. There’s been a surge in attention given to mobility start ups and mobility strategies recently, but there’s still a banger of problem on everyone’s mouths: how do we upgrade mobility to a future-proof system? Kumail Tyebjee at Information Week just may have the solution.

Mobility is a volitile field. The growth is staggering, and this is good for investors and businesses, but the problem comes from innovation: the technology is accelerating at a rate that makes it very difficult to keep up. Mobility strategies for companies that are too closely tied to one device or one operating system or one solution can find themselves falling further and further behind as technology (and great ideas that revolutionize how people use that technology) get more advanced.

Tyebjee offers a few key points that should tackle these problems. “So how does a company keep up with the evolving mobility market space,” he writes, “implement a robust mobility first strategy, and more importantly, create differentiated user experiences and transform their business processes through innovation?” It’s all about innovation and understanding the theory as much as the practice. “Different businesses with different objectives would require vastly different enterprise mobility strategies and accompanying investments. A good starting point would be to examine the key drivers behind an enterprise mobility pursuit and understand how various factors affect the mobility journey in an organization.”

Tyebjee recommends what he calls a “mobility canvas,” a strategy which combines information from multiple sources from both the consumer and the business side, to create the best mobility ecosystem.

Choose a Partner: Mobile as a strategic imperative is not just about having the best mobile app or benchmarking feature and device support. It is about investment in the right people, partners and platforms required to support connected experiences for your mobile consumers. The right partner can provide subject matter expertize and draw on multi-client and cross-industry experience to make sense of the constantly evolving mobile environment, avoid unnecessary fads, and zoom in on what makes sense for your company.
Create a mobile strategy: Understand your organization’s objectives in terms of goals, priorities, target areas, and implementation timelines. This is also an area where a mobility partner can provide expertize and experience to guide you in developing your mobile vision and strategy.
Develop a roadmap: Analyze the technical and organizational feasibility of the identified mobility use cases and prioritize them. A well-developed roadmap will help your team drive innovation and maximize adoption. It may be a good idea to initiate and run an enterprise mobility platform and application assessment to identify potential hurdles in your mobile roadmap and plan accordingly.
